BEYOND THE BEDSIDE: REIMAGINING NARRATIVE MEDICINE FOR KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION IN REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

We often talk about โ€œfollowing the science,โ€ yet our KNOWIT teamโ€™s research shows that true knowledge translation goes beyond moving data fromย benchโ€‘toโ€‘bedsideโ€”it implies bridging the divide between biological and biographical life and fostering bidirectional interaction among diverse knowledge cultures. In other words, science must also follow the humanities.

This autumn Iโ€™m engaged in several initiatives that embody this vision:

๐Ÿ”น๐‹๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฅ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ: This summer, colleagues from King’s College London, Facultรฉ de Santรฉ – Universitรฉ Paris Citรฉ, the University of Vienna, Universitรฉ catholique de Louvain and University of Oslo joined me to launch an openโ€‘access seriesโ€”‘Bridging Humanities and Medicine for Sustainable Societal Impact’. Itโ€™s designed to build an evolving archive of lectures on translational medical humanities.

๐Ÿ”นCircle U. (European University Alliance) ๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž:ย Last week, I launched a crossโ€‘European course where students explore how medicine and the humanities depend on each other to address todayโ€™s complex healthcare challenges.

๐Ÿ”น๐€๐š๐ซ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ค๐ž๐ฒ๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐ž:ย In November, Iโ€™ll join the BRIGHT group at Aarhus University for a masterclass and keynote to explore how storytelling can drive health improvement and policy change.

These conversations all feed into my forthcoming monograph with Mona Baker. ๐๐ž๐ฒ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐๐ž๐๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ž: ๐‘๐ž๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐Œ๐ž๐๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐Š๐ง๐จ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ž๐๐ ๐ž ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐ฅ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ข๐ง ๐‘๐ž๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก (Cambridge University Press & Assessment, 2026) reconceptualises narrative medicine beyond its โ€œsoftโ€ clinical image, framing it as an essential translational skill. We examine how narratives influence evidence in contentious areas of reproductive healthโ€”abortion, transgender youth care, and IVFโ€”and show how narrative perspectives facilitate knowledge translation.
